ELKHART -- Betty Jean Welch, 83, of Elkhart, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 9, 2010, at Elkhart Rehabilitation Center, where she had resided since May 2006.

She was born Sept. 25, 1927, in South Bend to the late William A. and Isola Bennett. On Dec. 30, 1948, she married Jay Welch. He preceded her in death.

Surviving are a son, Larry (Barbara) Welch of Indianapolis; close friend Pastor James L. (Betty J.) Holiday; and her significant other, Wilbert Newsome of Elkhart.

Betty was a homemaker and baby sat for many years for her friends. She also volunteered with the American Red Cross and rang bells for the Salvation Army.

A memorial celebration service will be at 6:30 p.m. today, Nov. 12, 2010, at Unique Outreach Ministries, 2649 Morton Ave., Elkhart. Pastor James L. Holiday will be officiating.

Cremation has taken place, with Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart assisting with arrangements.
