ELKHART — Bernice Evangaline Cook, 85, of Elkhart, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at her residence.
She was born Sept. 23, 1927, in Trinidad, Colo., to Benedict and Sarafina (Baca) Leyba.
On Feb. 6, 1946, she married Raymond Cook Jr.
In addition to her husband, other survivors include two daughters, Sandra (Numan) Amouri of South Bend and Patricia Gene Cook of Mishawaka; two grandchildren, Shawn Raymond Kotoske and Tara Anne Kotoske; and two great-grandchildren, Bailey Patricia Howell and Austin Michael Howell.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son Thomas Allen Cook; and three brothers, Robert Elroy Leyba, Ernest Timothy Leyba and Benedict Raymond Leyba.
Bernice attended nursing school while living in Trinidad.
She worked for several years as an office manager for the M.O. Wolfe accounting firm, which later became Ernst and Young.
She was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Elkhart.
Bernice loved to spend time reading, sewing, making arts and crafts and spending winters in Florida with her husband.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at noon Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1331 N. Main St., Elkhart. The Rev. William Sullivan will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger.
