Mrs. Barbara Ann Nunley, 82, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 7, 2026, at 11:17 a.m.

Barbara was born in Marietta, Ohio, on March 14, 1944, to the late James Robert and Juanita Joy (Laughery) Poland. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Richard B. Poland, and her beloved son, Richard R. Nunley, Jr.

Barbara leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love and devotion, beginning with her beloved husband of 62 years, Richard Ryan “Ric” Nunley, Sr., who remains at home. She is also survived by her son, Christopher T. (Sara J.) Nunley of South Bend; her daughter-in-law, Doris Nunley of Canton, Ohio; her brother, Robert D. (Julie) Poland of Sebastian, Florida; and her grandchildren, Courtney (John) Merenkovich, Annie (Alex) Dickson, Bridget Nunley, Richard Nunley, Dean Nunley, Jack Nunley, and Ella Nunley. She will also be deeply missed by a modest host of extended family, dear friends, neighbors, and acquaintances whose lives were made a little warmer by knowing her.

Barbara was a woman of quiet strength, gentle spirit, and remarkable devotion to the people she loved. She did not need to be the loudest person in the room to make her presence known. Her love was expressed in the countless things she did for others—the meals prepared, the clothes washed, the yards tended, the games attended, the prayers offered, and the steady, reassuring presence she gave to her family throughout the years. She was the kind of woman whose love could often be found in the details, and she took those details very seriously.

A proud 1962 graduate of Timken Vocational High School in Canton, Ohio, Barbara held a special place in her heart for her alma mater. While there, she played clarinet in the band and graduated first in her class in the cosmetology course of study. Her determination, intelligence, and attention to detail were qualities she carried with her throughout her entire life.

Barbara was, in every sense, a quintessential homemaker, wife, and mother. For the majority of her life, her home and family were her greatest work and her greatest joy. She took tremendous pride in keeping her home immaculate, and her family often marveled at her almost scientific approach to housekeeping. When it came to laundry, Barbara was a force to be reckoned with. There simply had not yet been a stain invented that she could not defeat. One suspects she may have considered a stubborn stain more of a personal challenge than a household nuisance.

Her love of hard work extended well beyond the walls of her home. Barbara loved being outdoors and was never afraid to get her hands dirty. She would mow the grass, trim weeds, tackle lawn work, and happily take her turn as the family’s “fire master” at the burn pit. She was not one to sit around waiting for someone else to do a job she knew she could handle herself.

Barbara was also a wonderful cook and baker, and her family knew better than to arrive at her home without leaving room for dessert. Her Texas Sheet Cakes were legendary and undoubtedly held the title of family favorite, with her pecan pies and crescent rolls close behind. Barbara believed firmly that the best things in life were made from scratch. A box mix simply would not do. Her meals were prepared with care, patience, and love—the kind of food that did more than fill a stomach; it made people feel at home.

She loved flowers, long walks, and going to the gym. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, including watching Everybody Loves Raymond, listening to rock music from the ’50s and ’60s, and enjoying a little old-school country music as well. She was a devoted Christian and attended New Life Church in Osceola, where her faith was an important and enduring part of who she was.

Barbara was especially proud of her family. She was their constant supporter, encourager, and number-one cheerleader. If one of her children or grandchildren was participating in a sporting event, there was a very good chance Barbara would be there to watch, encourage, and cheer them on. She believed in showing up—not just physically, but wholeheartedly. Her family knew they could count on her to be in their corner.

She also enjoyed traveling and looked forward to making her annual trip to Myrtle Beach. Whether she was enjoying the ocean air, spending time with family, tending to her home and yard, or simply settling in to watch her favorite television show, Barbara had an appreciation for the familiar joys that made life meaningful. She was also a devoted Ohio State Buckeyes football fan, giving her one more reason to cheer loudly and proudly for the team she loved.

Above all else, Barbara was a loving and gentle lady. She was a woman who gave of herself freely and found meaning in caring for others. Her life was not measured by grand gestures or the pursuit of recognition, but by the steady accumulation of small acts of love that, over 82 years, became something very grand indeed.

For 62 years, she and Ric shared the journey of marriage—a lifetime of memories, laughter, work, family, challenges, celebrations, and the quiet companionship that comes from truly building a life together. Barbara’s devotion to her husband and family was evident in all that she did. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, homemaker, baker, gardener, cheerleader, faithful Christian, and friend. She filled each of those roles with a tenderness and determination that were uniquely her own.

Those who knew Barbara will remember her gentle nature, her strong work ethic, her impeccable standards, her homemade cooking, her love of family, and the many ordinary moments she turned into memories. They will remember her hands always busy, her heart always giving, and her home always ready to welcome the people she loved.

Her family will miss her deeply—not only on the important days, but in the little moments when they instinctively reach for the phone, pass by a favorite place, smell something baking, see a flower blooming, or encounter a stubborn stain that Barbara would have known exactly how to handle.

In accordance with the wishes of her family, visitation for Barbara will be held at Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart on Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m., with her service beginning at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Jeremy Sarber will officiate. Cremation will follow.

Barbara’s earthly work is now finished, but the love she gave will continue in the lives of the people she leaves behind. Her family carries her forward in the recipes she perfected, the lessons she taught, the traditions she cherished, and, most of all, in the love she so generously gave them.

She will be greatly missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
