Obituary

Ms. Barbara Faye “Barb” Eaton, 72, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home on Friday evening, March 20, 2026, at 9:55 p.m., following a sudden illness. Though her passing came rather soon, the love she gave throughout her life remains a steady and enduring presence in the hearts of all who knew her.

Barb was born on January 14, 1954, in Marion, Kentucky, to the late Rayburn and Lossie Mae (Guess) Doom. Raised with strong values of faith, family, and hard work, she carried those principles with her throughout her life, shaping the way she loved, served, and cared for others.

On November 30, 1979, Barb married Michael J. “Mike” Eaton in Mishawaka, Indiana. Together, they built a life rooted in devotion, laughter, and unwavering partnership, sharing 47 beautiful years of marriage. Their home was not only a place of comfort, but a gathering place filled with warmth, good food, and the kind of love that made everyone feel welcome.

Barb’s greatest joy in life was her family. She was a loving mother to Michelle R. (Will) Troyer of South Bend and Anthony T. (Brandi) Roberts of Elkhart. Her love only deepened as she became a grandmother, cherishing every moment spent with Lydia and Lincoln Troyer, Katelyn, Zoe, and Anthony Roberts, Jr. She poured her heart into her family, creating traditions, memories, and meals that will be remembered for generations.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved grandson, Liam Troyer; and her sisters, Marcena Chaney, Odie Huff, and Hazel Freisner. Brothers Charles, Jimmy, Timmy, and Dwayne Doom. While their absence was felt deeply in her life, Barb carried their memory with grace and quiet strength.

She is also survived by her loving siblings: brother Gerald (Joy) Doom of Marion, Kentucky; and sisters Wanda Berry of Marion, Gail (Ronnie) Hackney of Smithland, Kentucky, Eula Bates of Paducah, Kentucky, and Darlene Besser of Valparaiso. In addition, Barb leaves behind a wide circle of extended family, dear friends, and kind neighbors who were blessed to know her gracious spirit, including her cousin/best friend Dale (Don) Beverly from Eddyville, Kentucky.

Barb spent many years working as a server in the local hospitality industry, including her time at the former Elkhart Ramada Inn. She also dedicated nearly two decades to catering, where she found genuine joy in bringing people together over a shared meal. For Barb, serving others was never just a job—it was a reflection of her heart. She had a way of making people feel seen, cared for, and at home.

A woman of deep and abiding faith, Barb was a devoted Christian who found strength and community at the Real Church of Elkhart on Middleton Run Road. Her faith guided her daily life, shaping her kindness, her humility, and her quiet acts of compassion.

Barb had a gift for creating comfort in simple, meaningful ways. She loved preparing large holiday meals, where her kitchen became the heart of the home. Her Swiss steak, a family favorite, was requested time and time again—a testament not just to her cooking, but to the love she poured into every dish. In quieter moments, she found enjoyment in watching “Gunsmoke” and “Law & Order,” her familiar and comforting companions, or cheering on the Indianapolis Colts whenever they took the field.

More than anything, Barb will be remembered for the way she loved—with sincerity, warmth, and a steady, giving heart. She lived a life of humility and grace, finding joy not in grand gestures, but in everyday acts of care and connection. Her legacy is one of devotion—to her family, her faith, and the countless lives she touched along the way.

In accordance with her family’s wishes, visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Elkhart, beginning at 12:00 noon, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Officiating will be Michael’s brother-in-law, Doug (Vicky) Reifsnyder, who made the trip here from Oregon. Cremation will follow, and Barb will return home, where her presence will forever remain.

Though she is no longer with us in body, Barb’s love continues—quietly, faithfully, and forever
