Arthur L. "Art" Shafer, 87, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at The Timbers of Cass County, Dowagiac, MI on Wednesday, Mar. 20, 2019 following a brief illness.

He was born in Marshall Co., IN on July 30, 1931 to the late Verl C. and Ida (Gordon) Shafer and married Marilyn J. Howard in 1955 in South Bend.  She passed in Elkhart in 2014.

Surviving are children Sandra (Tim) Wallin, Karen Beck, David (Linda) Collins-Shafer and Gary (Joan) Shafer; grandchildren Jacob (Rachael Hackler) Wallin, Skye (Bryan) DePaul, Alaina Beck, Sarah Gangwer and James (Kim) and Jeremy (Emily) Maggert, and great-grandchildren Alexandria Wallin, Bella Gangwer and Camren, Paxtin, Tanner "T.J.", Lyndon and Luxley Maggert. A sister, Betty Rouch, precedes Art in death.

No immediate services have been planned and cremation is scheduled to take place. A burial will be held later in the summer. Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services have been assisting the family with arrangements.

Art worked in banking, sales and real estate for the better part of his adult life. He was an avid equestrian and loved to ride. He also served honorably in the US Army during the Korean War.
