ELKHART — Arnold D. "Dean" Mast, 69, of Elkhart, passed away at 7:46 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, 2011, at Elkhart General Hospital after a sudden illness.
He was born Nov. 6, 1942, in Buffalo, N.Y., to the late Charles D. and Ada F. (Rupp) Mast.
Surviving are two sons, James S. and Timothy D. "Tim" (Tracy) Mast, both of Elkhart; two sisters, Sharon E. Stolz of Elkhart and Rosann K. (Ken) Johnson of Goshen; a brother, Wayne L. (Betty) Mast of Goshen; and four grandchildren.
Dean was preceded in death by a grandson, Dominick J. Mast.
Visitation will be two hours prior to the 1 p.m. funeral scheduled for Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, starting at 11 a.m. at Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart. Pastor Robert Price will officiate. In accordance with Dean's wishes, cremation will follow services.
Dean founded Arnold's Flooring of Elkhart in 1965 and had been in business ever since. He was a 1961 graduate of Concord High School, attended Zion Bible Institute in Providence, R.I., and was a member of Elkhart Moose Lodge 599. He also carried a private pilot's license and enjoyed taking his boys on Saturday morning breakfast fly-ins when they were younger. Although not a member of the armed forces, Dean enlisted in the Mennonite Voluntary Services and served several years at a hospital in Gary during the Vietnam War.
