ELKHART -- Al Spahn, 88, of Elkhart, died Monday evening (July 23, 2007) in Elkhart General Hospital.

Beloved husband of Frances ("Fran") I. Spahn (Kuntz), who recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Devoted father of Tom Spahn (wife Joy, son Nate and his wife, Julie) of Ada, Mich., Kay Londergan (husband Dave, daughter Kristin and son Matt) of Granger; and Jim Spahn (wife Sue and sons Chris and Zak) of Elkhart.

A native of Dubuque, Iowa, Mr. Spahn was preceded in death by a brother, Fred of Dubuque; two sisters, Mildred Yonan of Burbank, Calif., and Dolores Weiner of Dubuque; and a son, Paul M. Spahn of Elkhart.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, where a parish rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Visitation also will take place a half hour before Saturday's 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1405 N. Main St., Elkhart. The Rev. Bill Sullivan will officiate. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, South Bend.

Mr. Spahn was a graduate of Loris College, Dubuque, Iowa. He went on to earn his law degree from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Ind., in 1946. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a bombardier, reached the rank of major and flew a significant number of successful missions while based in England.

He was admitted to the Indiana State Bar Association in 1948 and began a private law practice in Elkhart as Bontrager & Spahn. He served as corporate counsel for a number of significant business clients in Elkhart. He then joined Holiday Rambler as its corporate counsel and played a major role in the company's successful sale to Harley-Davidson.

After the sale of Holiday Rambler, Mr. Spahn continued practicing law on corporate, estate, trust and real-estate matters up until the time of his death. He was a recipient of the Indiana Bar Foundation's 50 Year Award.

An avid Notre Dame sports fan, Mr. Spahn also had a love of the outdoors that included fishing and raising horses on his farm at Cobus Oaks. He was an active member of the Elks Club in Elkhart as well as the University Club of Notre Dame for many years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Mr. Spahn's memory to a charity of the donor's choice.
