ELKHART -- Longtime professional musician and bandleader Albert M. Hidalgo, 73, of Elkhart, passed away on Friday, Jan. 25, 2007 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in South Bend as a result of injuries from a car-train accident in Osceola.

Albert was born on Nov. 15, 1934, in Batangas, Philippines, to Isais and Josefa (Makalintal) Hidalgo. He married Flocerfida "Flo" Liamco on Aug. 20, 1977, in Taipei, Taiwan, whom he met while they both were working in Taipei.

He is survived by his wife and partner of over 30 years, Flo Hidalgo of Elkhart, and a son, Albert L. Hidalgo Jr. of Chicago. Surviving as well are his three brothers, Josefino (Norma) Hidalgo of Canada, Jerry (Violet) Hidalgo of Chicago and Rogelio (Baby) Hidalgo of Batangas, Philippines, and a sister Corazon (Romulo) Pantoja of Q.C., Philippines.

Albert was preceded in death by a brother, Ruben Hidalgo, and sister, Lori Hidalgo.

Friends may call on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Billings Funeral Home 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, where a vigil service will be held at 4 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church with the Rev. Phil DeVolder officiating, where friends may also call for a half-hour prior to the service. At Albert's request, cremation will follow services.

As a popular entertainer in the Michiana area, he has played at numerous local establishments, some of which include the Bulldog Restaurant and Lounge, the former Irish Pub Piano Bar in the Midway Motor Lodge in Elkhart, the Meijer Store in Goshen and at Parisi's Italian Ristorante in South Bend. Albert also entertained with his band, Albert and the Saints, at Concert on the Green series and the Elkhart Jazz Festival. His repertoire is long and distinguished. Albert began studying piano at the age of 5 while living in the Philippines, and came to the United States at the age of 43 and has been working ever since. He could play music from classical to jazz, European to oriental. Starting in the 1950's he played at the Hong Kong Peninsula Hotel. From 1956 to 1976 he was the bandleader and musical director at the U.S. Military Club MAAG in Taipei, Taiwan, where he backed up such greats as Pattie Page, Jane Russell, Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughn, Mel Torme, The Four Aces, Four Tops, Roy Orbison, The Mills Brothers, Lionel Hampton, The Platters and others just to name a few. From 1977 to present he and his wife, Flo, have entertained countless from Atlantic City to Las Vegas and all points in-between. Albert attended St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church and in his spare time enjoyed fishing and watching old movies, especially westerns and action films, and listening to his favorite jazz artists, Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson.
