July 5, 1914 - April 22, 2010

ELKHART -- Albert B. "Al" Carroll Sr., 95, of Elkhart, died at 2:15 a.m. Thursday (April 22, 2010) at Miller's Merry Manor in Wakarusa after an extended illness.

He was born July 5, 1914, to the late John and Mary Koro in South Bend. He married Doris Selanders on Jan. 31, 1981, in Elkhart.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Carroll of Elkhart; two sons, Albert "Al" Carroll Jr. of Las Vegas, Nev., and Dennis (Mary) Carroll of Michigan City; daughter Linda Ahlene of Las Vegas; two stepsons, Scott (Dana) Selanders of Fishers and Daniel Selanders of Phoenix, Ariz.; stepdaughter Sue (Eric) Gunderson of Elkhart; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his former wife, Alice (Quier) Carroll; son Joseph Carroll; two brothers; and three sisters.

He was a member of the South Bend Federation of Musicians and played standup bass for the Joe Lemar Orchestra in South Bend and enjoyed playing the harmonica in later years. Known as "Kid Carroll," he was a Golden Gloves boxer, winning the championship in 1931. He retired from A.M. General Corp. in South Bend after working at C.J. Conn and Studebaker Corp. He enjoyed fishing, jogging and reading. He attended First United Methodist Church and Calvary Assembly of God, both in Elkhart.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the 4:30 p.m. memorial service Monday (April 26, 2010) at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Pastor Dennis Carroll will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in Prairie Street Cemetery, Elkhart.
