Vernon J. Johnson, 55, of Elkhart, passed away Tuesday morning, March 19, 2019 at the Center for Hospice Care, Elkhart, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on November 16, 1963 in Benton Harbor, Michigan to the late Albert Johnson Sr. and Gertrude (Forrest) Johnson.
Surviving are his life-long companion of 33 year Margaret Bean- Johnson; son, Vernon “Terrence” (Lakeia) Whitfield; daughters, Monique Bean, Veronique Johnson and Ashley Johnson. His mother Gertrude Johnson, brother, Albert Johnson, Jr.; sisters Rosie Holloway and Tonia (Terrence) Williams; Step-mother Katherine Johnson; siblings, Veronica (Clyde) Donaldson, Barbara (Blake) Miller and Julius (Amy) James. He is also survived by three special brothers-in-law; Willie (Patty) Bean, James (Ernestine) Bean and Willie (Stephanie) Williams; as well and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Vernon was preceded in death by his father, Albert Johnson Sr. and his grandson, Anthony Johnson.
Born in Benton Harbor, MI, Vernon moved to Indiana at age 12. He was a “blue collar” worker until 1999 when he was diagnosed with degenerative bone disease, having to endure total hips, knees, and shoulders replacements. Vernon gave himself a second nickname of “bionic man.” He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, cooking, art, gardening, telling jokes and speaking his mind. He was a member of the King David Lodge #53 F & AM.
Friends and family of Vernon J. Johnson will gather from 5-6:30 p.m. with masonic services by King David Lodge #53 starting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2019 at Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 812 Baldwin St. Elkhart. Per his wishes, cremation will follow.
