Samuel A. “Sam” Owens, 81, of Niles, MI and formerly of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at Elkhart General Hospital on Monday, Dec. 31, 2018 following an extended illness.
He was born Dec. 11, 1937 to the late Marvin and Deola (Walker) Owens.
Surviving are children Madrina (Joseph) Barnes, Crystal, David, Darrian and Duane Owens and their mother Norma Jean Owens; a son Terrance Jones; long-time companion Ernestine “Tina” Dockery; 10 grand and 22 great grandchildren and a host of supportive nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his five siblings.
Sam’s life will be celebrated at Community Missionary Baptist Church at 228 Chapman Avenue, Elkhart, on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019 at 12:00 noon, with visitation beginning at 11 am. Pastors Clarence Jones and Rev. Lefate Owens will officiate and burial will follow at Rice Cemetery. Billings Funeral Home and Cremation services are assisting the family with arrangements.
Sam worked for the City of Elkhart on the street department from 1964 until his retirement nearly 40 years later. He was also an accomplished athlete and competed in a travelling Softball league for a team representing Beck Industries during the 60’s and 70’s which won state championships multiple times. He also loves watching westerns, playing basketball, cooking and attending Community M. B. Church.
