Mr. Pierce Allen Atkins, 90, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at Riverside Village in Elkhart on Wednesday, Apr. 24, 2019 after nearly a decade long battle with dementia.
He was born in Elkhart on Apr. 11, 1929 to the late Elder N.P. and Lillie Mai (Curry) Atkins. He later married Jane E. Emery in Goshen on April 26, 1980. She survives at home.
Also surviving are his sons Christopher and Aaron Atkins; granddaughter Jayda Atkins; nieces Kimberly (Thomas) Ross and Yolanda Millsaps; nephews Todd and Thomas Atkins, Jr. and a host of loving cousins, extended family and friends.
Pierce’s life will be celebrated with a memorial service at Union Center Church of the Brethren, 70535 CR 11, (CR 11 at CR 50) Nappanee, on Monday. Apr. 29, 2019 at 2:00 pm with visitation beginning one hour prior. Pastor Frank Ramirez will officiate and burial will follow at a later date. Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart have been assisting with arrangements.
Pierce worked in maintenance his entire life, spending 36 years at the Elkhart Police Department, as well as doing maintenance for the offices of Dr. Irving and Dr. Mishkin in Elkhart He also worked at Falcone’s Restaurant and the Boys Club of Goshen. He was a member of the Union Center Church of the Brethren and a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Elkhart County. Pierce will be best remembered for his ability to make everyone laugh and his love and compassion for area youth and his involvement with the annual FOP Children’s Christmas Party.
Memorials may be given to the Elkhart Evening Optimists or to the Elkhart FOP #52 Children’s Christmas Party Fund or to Union Center Church.
