Lora J. “Jean” Miller, 95, of Elkhart, passed away at her residence on Sunday, September 29, 2019. She was born on May 15, 1924 in Ligonier, IN and was later brought into the lives of the late Carl and Phyllis (Schock) Baer.
She married Gerald L. Miller on October 16, 1942 in Elkhart, who passed away on January 8, 2005. Jean and Gerald spent 63 wonderful years of marriage together and have now been reunited with one another again. She is also proceeded in death by her parents and an infant son and daughter. Jean is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Nichols; grandson, Jonathan (Traci) Nichols; granddaughter, Jody (Gaurang) Shah; and 13 great grandchildren.
In accordance with the family’s wishes, cremation will take place at Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart. No public services will be held at this time. A private graveside service will take place at Rice Cemetery at a later date, where she will be laid to rest with her husband, Gerald, and the rest of her family. Jean worked as a cafeteria cook for Elkhart Community Schools for 10 years and worked at American Handicrafts where she taught a few arts and crafts classes before the store went out of business. She was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church since it’s beginning when it was founded by her great great grandmother. Jean loved making handicrafts from, crocheting, knitting, sewing, quilt making, creating lamp shades from stained glass, and making clothes for her daughter and grandchildren when they were younger. She also enjoyed gardening and working outside in the sunlight. Jean was a sports fan as well, especially of baseball. She enjoyed watching the Cubs and the White Sox. Most of all, Jean loved her family. She will be missed greatly by her loving family and friends.
