ELKHART: Harold “Dick” Crabtree, 91, residing in Elkhart, passed away Thursday morning, January 24, 2019 at the home of his daughter, where he lived. Harold was born on March 28, 1927 in Chattaroy, West Virginia to the late James and Eliza (Blankenship) Crabtree. He married the former Phyllis James on September 2, 1947 in Maysville, Kentucky. Phyllis passed away on February 11, 2013 after 65 wonderful years together.
Surviving is a daughter Pamela Stevens; five loving grandchildren, Trisha M. (David) Wise, Michael D. (Mandi) Stevens, Stephanie S. (Steven) Kowalski, Andrew A. (Jackie) Stevens and Kathy (Nicholas) Baughman; 8 great grandchildren.
Harold was preceded in death by his son-in-law Larry Michael Stevens, siblings, Elmer Crabtree, William Crabtree, Homer Crabtree, Jesse James Crabtree, sisters Thelma Bevans, America Smith and twins, Glen and Glenna Crabtree.
Harold retired as a supervisor at Columbus Coated Fabrics in Columbus, Ohio after 43 years. He was a member of First Brethren Church in Elkhart. He honorably served in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the destroyer USS Welles. He enjoyed attending his naval reunion group, Destroyer Division 38.
Services celebrating Harold’s life will begin at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 31, 2019 at the First Brethren Church, 24197 CR 16, Elkhart, with visitation 2 hours prior. Pastor Dan Herendeen will officiate. Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Navy Funeral Honor Guard and DAV #19., at the conclusion of the service. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly request memorials to the church or Center for Hospice Care.
