Gerald George “Jerry” VanOoteghem, 79, of Granger, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at his home following an extended illness.
He was born in Mishawaka on Nov. 4, 1939 to the late Harry R. and Margaret G. (VanTurnhout) VanOoteghem, and later married Barbara Ann Judd on Mar. 2, 1968 in Elkhart. She survives after 51 wonderful years together.
He is also survived by his children Joseph and Jeffery VanOoteghem and Kimberly (Glen) Judd Cook; a brother Steve VanOoteghem; 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. A sister, Julie Coleman and a brother, David VanOoteghem precede Jerry in death.
Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart are hosting a celebration of Jerry’s life on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at 7:00 pm, with visitation beginning at 6 pm.
Jerry retired from Plumrose Foods after 25 years there as smokehouse manager. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was quite an accomplished woodcarver as well, belonging to the Cass Co. Woodcarver’s Association. He was also a devout Chicago Cubs and Fighting Irish fan.
Memorial donations may be given to the Humane Society of Elkhart County or to Heartland Hospice. Online condolences may be left at the funeral home’s website.
