ELKHART — The Honorable Donald W. “Don” Jones, 82, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at home following an extended illness at 6:50 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2018.

He was born Aug. 17, 1935, in Rockville, to the late Raymond W. and Helen (Stahl) Jones, and leaves behind his loving wife, Nancy E. (Kidder) Jones of Elkhart.

Also surviving are his children, Debora (Terry) Hagans, Rhonda (Don) Giles and Richard (Karen) and David Jones; brother Robert Jones; sister Marcia Clements; grandchildren Joshua (Ashley) Gorce, Renee (Jason Malone) and Seth Hagans, Holli (Justin) Ashbrook, Shelly (Eric) Pallowick, Kelly, J. David (Kristen Zollo) and Andrew Giles, Elizabeth (Mac) Owens, Jennifer (Jeremy) Walker, Nicole (Billy) Jensen and Russell (Beth), Madison, Gabby and Olivia Jones; and 23 loving great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death is his stepmother, Thelma Jones.

Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart is hosting Judge Jones’ life celebration services beginning with a memorial visitation from 4-6 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2018, followed by a remembrance service at 6 p.m. officiated by his friend, Pastor Tom Thews of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in South Bend.

In accordance with his wishes, the judge has been cremated.

Don served as a judge for 35 years, primarily as judge of Elkhart Superior Court 1, retiring from full time duties in 1996.

He also served 20 years as a captain in the U.S. Army with the Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) office.

He received his law degree from Indiana University and was a member of the bar association and Elkhart’s Trinity United Methodist Church.

He always liked watching his grand and great-grandchildren participate in their scholastic and sporting events, and enjoyed listening to classical music, dining out (especially Chinese) and watching his beloved Cubbies knock another one out of the ball park!!

Memorial donations may be given to the charity of one’s choice.
