Stuart E. Mayes

ELKHART — Stuart E. Mayes, 50, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at 2:20 a.m. Monday, July 10, 2017, at the Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart with his family at his side following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born, in Elkhart, July 12, 1966, to the late Elmer and Delores “Ann” (Coleman) Mayes and later married Loria Mitchell in Elkhart in 2012. She survives at home.

Also left to cherish his memory are his children, Stuart (Leslie) Mayes and stepdaughter Kaitlyn Mitchell; siblings Sheila Mills and Sidney Mayes; two grandchildren; a stepmother the Rev. Jean Mayes; four stepbrothers; two stepsisters; and a host of extended family.

Pastor Charlie Cross and the congregation of St. James AME Church, 122 Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, Elkhart, are honored to host Stuart’s homegoing services with a celebration of his life beginning there at 6 p.m. with viewing starting at 5 p.m. Thursday July 13.  

He was an U.S. Army veteran.

Burial with full military honors will follow later at a private graveside service. 

Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart has been assisting the family with arrangements.

Stuart accepted Christ at a young age. He was a member of St. James AME Church; serving as a trustee, greeter and usher. 

A member of the Indiana Black Expo, he enjoyed basketball and spending time with friends and family. 

A kind, compassionate and Christian gentleman, he loved to help others whenever he could. 

The family has requested that memorial donations may be given to the Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart.
