ELKHART — Douglas A. Zachary, 57, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at 11:58 a.m. Monday, April 17, 2017,  at home following a brief illness.

He was born in Berrien Springs, Michigan, July 25, 1959, to his late mother Loretta (Rapert) Frasher-Olson, and later married Michele R. (Hartman) Cole on Oct. 15, 2005, in South Bend. She survives at home.

Doug had worked for more than10 years at FM Construction, serving there as superintendent.

He had served in the U.S. Army with a military police canine unit in both Korea and Germany, but stayed in Germany long after his enlistment was up to learn the skill and trade of “master” carpenter.

He was a classic car and Harley-Davidson enthusiast, and would often be seen cruising in his ‘74 Chevy Nova SS “Christine” or on his ‘67 Harley Panhead “Frankenstein”, who will both be present for Doug’s gathering.

He was also an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Also surviving are his children, Molly Shields of Goshen and Casey (Lauren) Martin, of Elkhart; his sister, Tammy (Thomas) Frasher-McIntee of Niles, Michigan: grandchildren Taylor, McKenzie, Kylie, Aydin and Colton; one nephew and three nieces.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Tarryn Zachary-Dowsett, stepfather Roger Olson and his constant faithful companion “Bubba” the cat.

 Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart is honored to host Doug’s celebration of life gathering there from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, April 24.  

In accordance with his wishes, cremation will follow his visitation.
