Donie J. Roberts Sr.

Union, Mich. — Donie J. Roberts Sr., 64, of Union, passed away peacefully at 10:45 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, in his residence, with his son and daughter-in-law by his side.

He was born Dec. 21, 1948, in Lex, W.Va., to George J. and Lucille (Boyd) Roberts.

On Dec. 29, 1969, he married the late Freda Mae (Hicks) Roberts in Grundy, W.Va. She preceded him in death on April 12, 2008.

Survivors include two sons, Donie J. Jr. and Tawnya Roberts of Elkhart, Ind., along with their six children and James N. “Nicky” Roberts of Dowagiac and several cousins.

Donie was employed with GMAC’s Hydramatic Transmission Plant for several years. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 599 in Elkhart.

Donie never knew a stranger. Donie loved to drive around Elkhart, stopping by to see all his buddies and say “Hi.” He was a familiar face at Bob Evans and often drove cars at Begley’s Auction on Thursday nights. Donie will be missed by many, but leaves behind many, many fond memories.

The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 4, 2013, with a Moose Ritual being performed at 7:45 p.m. at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart; and for one hour prior to the 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2013, funeral service at Billings Funeral Home. The Rev. Dale Turner will officiate. Interment will follow in Kessington Cemetery in Union.
